Meet the Teacher
My name is Leah Porter Tracy and I am a composer and vocalist born and raised in Hancock County. I went to Riverdale for my K-12 education, and the good thing about going to a small, rural school is that there are opportunities to try lots of different things. I did everything music-related that I could: choir, band, show choir, a cappella, piano, musicals, I loved it all! During my junior year of high school, I decided to start composing music, and in 2017, I began my bachelor’s degree in music composition at Bowling Green State University. My time at BGSU gave me the opportunity to study voice seriously for four years in addition to my composition studies. In 2021, after I graduated with my bachelor’s, my now-husband and I moved to Denver, CO to begin a new adventure working as a choir director and vocalist in a church. During my time in Colorado, I began teaching voice lessons on the side and unexpectedly loved it. I found a passion and joy in helping students to succeed in their performances in a way that I had never found when performing myself.
In 2024, I began a master’s degree in music composition at the University of Colorado Boulder where I served as a Graduate Part-Time Instructor teaching a four-semester series of courses that all undergraduate music students must take called Aural Skills. Also called “ear training,” aural skills refers to the ability to understand, identify, and recreate music purely through listening; it is the mental process of connecting what you hear with musical notation and vice versa. This experience was pivotal for me because, while instructing this course, I noticed that the singers in my classes were not as equipped as their instrumentalist peers. When I reflected on the vocal education that I received both during my time in grade school as well as in my undergraduate program, I realized that many of the key skills that musicians need to be successful are neglected in many “traditional” voice lesson environments.
I have just graduated from my master’s relocated to the Findlay area to be closer to family. I am dedicating my time and energy to creating a voice studio that emphasizes practical musical and performance skills alongside the necessary vocal technique needed to succeed as a musician in the long-term. My hope is that, whether a student wants to study music at the college level or not, they will have the necessary tools to engage with music critically at any stage of life.
